Confederate Women and the Civil War Military Justice System

Thomas Curran will give a presentation about the hundreds of Confederate sympathizing women who passed through the hands of the military justice system as prisoners of war in and around St. Louis. Those deemed guilty of the most serious infractions were confined to the nearby Alton prison. His talk focuses on those women and their experiences.

Curran is the author of "Soldiers of Peace: Civil War Pacifism and the Postwar Radical Peace Movement."  He is currently completing a history of Confederate women arrested and imprisoned in the St. Louis region during the Civil War.
