Celebrate National Kids to Parks Day! Enjoy naturalist-lead activities or explore the park on your own. Several programs will be offered.
Activities will include guided nature walks at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., which will focus on the park’s unique natural and cultural heritage, along with trail safety. The walks start at Thunderbird Lodge and will last about 45 minutes. Wear sturdy shoes as the trail may be muddy.
At 1 p.m., meet at Thunderbird Lodge to have some family kite fun. Parents and children can build and fly a kite of their own.
For an evening activity, come to the campground amphitheater at 6 p.m. for Critters of Washington State Park program, exploring year-round inhabitants of the park. Fresh popcorn will be provided.
There are also many ways for families to explore the park on their own. The park has outstanding examples of stone structures developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Stop by the park interpretive center for a self-guided tour map. Explore the petroglyph site located on the north end of the park, a fine representation of Native American rock carving. Hike and count the steps on the 1,000 Step Trail. Stop in the park office and let the staff know how many steps you count and a certificate will be presented. Kids of all ages can learn to skip stones on the Big River -- find the perfect stone and develop your stone skipping technique. Contact the park concessionaire for canoe, kayak or tube float trip offerings and rates.
Event time: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
