6/6/2015 | First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site | St. Charles, MO
First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site and the Historic Daniel Boone Home and Heritage Center (Lindenwood University) will collaborate on an event that invites participants to step back to the 1820s and experience what it was like to travel on one of America's early "highways," the Boone’s Lick Trail. The journey begins at the historic site, where you will learn about the role of the trail in westward migration and the original travelers and see an 1820s dry goods and hardware store. This introduction will take place in the buildings where Missouri's first legislators (some of them frontiersmen and others of the gentry) met to undertake the task of reorganizing Missouri's territorial government into a progressive state system.
Instead of covered wagons, modern day travelers will be transported via motor coach or shuttle bus and travel the first 20 miles of the original route. Location of significant sites, such as forts, taverns, (inns), bridges and stage coach stops will be pointed out and interpreted as you pass by. Where remnants of the original sites exist, the bus will stop and allow for a more in depth experience.
The tour leaves the original route and travels to the Historic Daniel Boone Home. Travelers will experience frontier life through period demonstrations, hands-on activities and an early 1800s meal served in a historic "dog-trot" cabin. There will also be a tour of the original Boone Home.
The journey back into the past returns to First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site, where it began. Cost for the trip is $75 per person and includes transportation, tours, a "frontier meal," snack and program materials, including a copy of the Boone’s Lick Road guide book. Participants must register in advance and space is limited.
Event partners include First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site, Historic Daniel Boone Home and Heritage Center and Boone’s Lick Road Association.
