On Saturday, Aug. 2, Battle of Athens State Historic Site will host a reenactment of the battle that took place at the site on Aug. 5, 1861.
The event will begin with camps opening at 9 a.m., followed by the battle reenactment at 1 p.m. and a traditional Civil War reenactment at 3 p.m. Reenactors will also perform drills and medical and civilian scenarios.
The museum in the Smith Hotel will be open for viewing and souvenir sales from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. Artisans and sutlers will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Other activities will include living history displays and demonstrations by sutlers, artisans, craftsmen and musicians. There will be food, crafts and memorabilia for sale.
This event is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Missouri Civil War Reenactors Association. It is free and open to the public, and there is no need to register. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket for the reenactments, as there is no seating on the battlefield.
