Missouri's Caves

1/11/2025 | Mastodon State Historic Site | Imperial, MO

Did you know that there is a whole world full of complex geological formations and unique ecosystems below Earth's surface? Our state has thousands of caves hidden underground.

On Saturday, Jan. 11, representatives from the National Speleological Society's Meramec Valley and Southeast Missouri chapters will be on-site to educate visitors about the wonders of caves. Participants will have the opportunity to visit informational tables to learn about cave critters, cave formations, cave mapping and spelunking safety. They will also get to test their spelunking abilities by crawling through a squeeze box!

This a drop-in program; visitors may participate anytime between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. This event is free and open to everyone, and there is no need to register. All activities will take place in the museum auditorium. Museum admission will be waived during the program, and visitors will be encouraged to view the exhibits after participating.
