Buffalo Soldiers Presentation

10/19/2024 | Crowder State Park | Trenton, MO

Join Crowder State Park staff and Missouri State Parks interpreter Kevin Smith for a presentation about the epic 1897 bicycle ride of the Buffalo soldiers.

In June of that year, the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps, an all-Black unit, also known as the "Buffalo Soldiers," rode from Fort Missoula, Montana, to St. Louis, Missouri. Their journey spanned 1,900 miles and took 41 days to complete. Nicknamed the Iron Riders because of the heavy one-speed bicycles they pedaled and their iron-hard constitutions, the soldiers endured conditions that would have daunted even the most avid modern-day cyclists. During the presentation, Smith will be dressed in an authentic Buffalo Soldier uniform and will have a replica of the bicycle used on the journey.

The presentation will take place at the Camp Grand River River Recreation Hall. It is free and open to the public, and there is no need to register. For more information, call the park office at 660-359-6473.

Presentation time: 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.
