BOOM! The Rise and Fall of Missouri’s Black Business Districts

6/17/2023 to 6/18/2023 | Nathan and Olive Boone Homestead State Historic Site | Ash Grove, MO

The Missouri State Museum's traveling exhibit "BOOM! The Rise and Fall of Missouri's Black Business Districts" will be on display at the Nathan and Olive Boone Homestead on June 17 and 18. Inspired by the Missouri State Parks-produced booklet "The Business: African-American Business People from Missouri's Past," "BOOM!" interprets the history of five Black business districts throughout the state. Due to segregation and racism, these business centers flourished, serving as the cornerstone of Black life, culture and survival from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. However, integration, civil rights legislation and urban renewal caused them to crumble and disappear.

The exhibit will be outside, and you may view it at your leisure; admission is free. In the event of inclement weather, the exhibit may temporarily close.
