Learn From the Artist: Garry McMichael, "Painting Elephant Rocks"

11/3/2019 | Elephant Rocks State Park | Belleview, MO

As part of our ongoing Artist Spotlight programing, Battle of Pilot Knob Historic Site will host a “learn from the artist” class on Sunday, Nov. 3. The class will be taught by artist Garry McMichael and will cover various topics pertinent to the work put into the art show display for the month of November.

McMichael will lead a discussion on how to photograph and paint landscapes of Elephant Rocks State Park. The talk will explain why McMichael was motivated to concentrate his artistic energies on painting the same subject matter for over a year. McMichael will show some of his artwork and equipment and will discuss topics such as:

  • How to photograph Elephant Rocks State Park, the best times for photography, what to look for, and how to take photos under a variety of weather and lighting conditions

  • The equipment he takes on an Elephant Rocks photo shoot and how he prepares for the conditions he might experience

  • His final paintings and photography choices and why he chose them

  • How to develop the unique color palette Elephant Rocks' landscapes requires and how that color palette has evolved over time

  • The challenge of painting the lichens and mosses that grow on the pink granite rocks and how to make them look natural

  • The pros and cons of painting “en plein air” versus painting in studio

  • The importance of artists creating a body of work

McMichael encourages participants to join in, ask questions and talk about their experiences photographing and painting Elephant Rocks and other locations in Arcadia Valley. Anyone who has painted Elephant Rocks is welcome to bring their paintings for the discussion.

The talk will take place in the auditorium of Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site, 7 miles southeast of Elephant Rocks. This event is free and open to the public.
