2026 Hero Hunt

at Mark Twain State Park

Important Dates:

  • Application deadline: Sept. 4, 2026
  • Hunt: Nov. 6-8, 2026

Hunt Overview:

Missouri State Parks is once again partnering with the Missouri Veterans Commission to provide 20 Missouri veterans an all-inclusive managed deer hunt at Mark Twain State Park. The 2026 Hero Hunt starts on Friday, Nov. 6, and ends on Sunday, Nov. 8.

This hunt provides everything you need once you arrive: lodging, food, deer tags, a hunting guide – we even process the deer you harvest. Hunters will stay at Si Colborn Group Camp at Mark Twain State Park.

This is the ninth year of Mark Twain's Hero Hunt. Partnering with the Missouri Veterans Commission allows park staff to provide an excellent recreational opportunity for veterans while also managing the deer population.

Application and Eligibility:

Veterans can apply online through the Missouri Veterans Commission or in person at a local Veterans Service Office. Applications are due by Friday, Sept. 4. Once the application window closes, 20 names will be drawn from the pool of applicants. Selected applicants will be notified beginning Sept. 15. Applicants who are not selected will not be notified.

Eligibility is limited to U.S. military veterans and active-duty service members, including reservists and National Guard members. In addition, anyone who has participated in a previous Hero Hunt at Mark Twain State Park is ineligible to participate again. However, you may register for the General Crowder Hunt at Crowder State Park if you have not participated in that hunt.

More Information:

If you are interested in participating but have a question about a specific accommodation or mobility issue, please call the Mark Twain State Park office at 573-248-9985.
