Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax

State Parks Funding

The primary source of funding for Missouri's state park system is half of the statewide one-tenth of 1% Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax. This tax provides about three-fourths of the division's budget for the operation and development of state parks and historic sites. All additional funding for Missouri State Parks comes from revenues generated in the state park system, along with some federal funds.

Sales Tax Origin and Renewals

Thank you for your continued support of Missouri's Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax!

The Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax was created through a constitutional amendment and earmarked specifically for the state park system and efforts to stop soil erosion. The tax was first approved by voters in 1984; it has since been reapproved by voters in 1988, 1996, 2006, 2016 and 2026. At least two-thirds of voters approved the tax the last five times, showing how much Missourians support their state park system.

2026 Renewal

In 2026, the tax was approved by approximately 82%, passing in every county. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the parent organization of Missouri State Parks, is grateful for this continued support.
