First Day Hike

at Big Sugar Creek State Park

1/1/2026 | Big Sugar Creek State Park | Pineville, MO.

Start the new year off right with a guided hike at Big Sugar Creek State Park. First Day Hikes are promoted by America's State Parks and are held at parks across the country at the start of each year.

This rugged hike will cover 3.3 miles on Ozark Chinquapin Trail. We will meet at the parking lot near the trailhead at 10 a.m. Sights along the trail will include open woodlands, rocky drainages, limestone bluffs and shale outcrops. Hikers should expect steep terrain and possible water crossings and muddy areas. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring water and snacks. A pit toilet is available near the trailhead.

This event is free and open to the public; all ages are welcome. Pets are allowed but must be leashed. Registration is required; a signup link will be posted here once it is available.

Big Sugar Creek State Park is managed out of Roaring River State Park. If this hike is canceled, an announcement will be emailed to registrants and posted on Roaring River's Facebook page and the Park and Site Status Map. For more information about the hike, please call the Roaring River State Park office at 417-847-2539.
