Outdoor Classroom: Butterflies

at Washington State Park

Join us on the fourth Friday of each month for a fun outdoor learning experience! Each program will feature a nature-themed story followed by a discussion about real-life applications and an interactive activity.

Each session will take place at the campground amphitheater at 2 p.m. These events are free and open to the public, and there is no need to register.

Series Schedule:

May 22: Butterflies

Listen to a Native tale of how the butterflies came to be, discuss ways to support butterfly populations, and plant milkweed seeds to take home with you.

June 26: Nature Dyes

Learn about traditional ways of dying clothing, and discover the natural dyes that might be hiding in your backyard! Plus, dye your own tea towel using vibrant natural hues.

July 24: Birdsong

Listen to a Native tale about how the flute was given to humans, and delve into bird songs and calls through a game of bird bingo! Receive a free do-it-yourself bird feeder kit complete with a bird observation log for continuing study at home.

Aug. 28: Web Weavers

Listen to an Osage legend explaining why the spider is a significant symbol. Learn to recognize different types of webs and the spiders that weave them. Participate in a game illustrating how spiders catch their prey.

Sept. 25: Autumn Leaves

Have you ever wondered why leaves change color in the fall? Join park staff to listen to a Native story offering one explanation. Then, make a lovely leaf collage to take home.

Oct. 23: Native Food Harvest

What kinds of foods did people eat before there were modern grocery stores? Join park staff to learn about traditional Osage farming and foraging practices, and listen to the story of the Three Sisters. Create a mosaic using the seeds of these three important figures to take home with you.
