MO Trees in Winter

at Mastodon State Historic Site

2/21/2026 | Mastodon State Historic Site | Imperial, Mo.

Learn to see the winter woods in a whole new way at Mastodon State Historic Site. This beginner-friendly program is designed for nature lovers, hikers and curious explorers who want to better understand the trees around them – even without leaves.

We’ll meet outside the museum, where we'll cover basic tree anatomy and share tips for identifying Missouri trees in winter using bark, buds and overall shape. Afterward, we’ll put our new skills to use on an easy 1-mile hike. Be sure to dress for the weather and consider bringing water and snacks.

This event is free and open to the public. Online registration is required, and there is a limit of 25 participants.
