PORTIONS OF WAKONDA STATE PARK WILL REOPEN SEPT. 12
JEFFERSON CITY, MO., AUG. 28, 2008 -- Portions of Wakonda State Park near La Grange, which closed in June because of flooding, will reopen to the public on Friday, Sept. 12, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources announced today.
The portions of the park that will be reopened include the campground and the day-use area, and recreational trailers will once again be available to rent. The lake can be accessed for fishing, but there will be no watercraft rentals. The beach, which normally closes after Labor Day, will remain closed. There will not be any laundry facilities available in the showerhouse, and the hiking trails will remain closed.
All camping will be on a first-come, first-serve basis through the end of the year. Campground reservations can be made for arrival after Jan. 1. The park includes both basic campsites and campsites with electricity. Recreational cabins can be rented on a first-come, first-serve basis through the end of October, which is when they close annually. They will open again on April 15. If you want to make a campground reservation for arrival after Jan.1, or for a recreational trailer after April 15, call toll free 877-422-6766 or visit www.mostateparks.com.
Visitors should be aware the park has not fully recovered from the flooding, and, although the park has reopened, conditions are not ideal. Located in the floodplain of the Mississippi River, the park was completely covered in several feet of water from flooding in June.
