SUMMER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION IS JUNE 21 AT ONONDAGA CAVE STATE PARK
JEFFERSON CITY, MO., JUNE 10, 2008 -- Explore the many uses for the sun at the Summer Solstice Celebration on June 21 at Onondaga Cave State Park near Leasburg. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the event will begin at 11 a.m. It is free and open to the public.
Beneath a large balloon powered by heat from the sun, the festivities will begin with a solar picnic outside the park's visitor center. Solar-cooked hotdogs, brownies and sun tea will be provided. The park's annual informational meeting will be held in conjunction with the solar picnic until 2 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to attend to learn more about the park's upcoming projects, share comments on park facilities and services and ask questions.
Afterwards, visitors can participate in a number of activities associated with solar energy and alternate forms of energy. A car that runs on vegetable oil will be on display as well as a solar panel, which can reduce energy costs in homes. While walking through a solar tunnel, visitors will learn how the sun is absorbed and reflected by different colors. Solar craft projects and games will be available. Telescopes will be available to watch for "Sunspots" to make an appearance at the park.
