MISSOURI'S STATEWIDE COMPREHENSIVE OUTDOOR
RECREATION PLAN AVAILABLE ONLINE

JEFFERSON CITY, MO., MAY 28, 2008 -- Missouri's 2008-2012 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan is now available online.

This plan provides information to the citizens of Missouri on the number and types of outdoor recreation available at a local and statewide level. This information is used by many state and local communities when planning future development and renovation of outdoor recreational opportunities.

The SCORP was prepared by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for the State Inter-Agency Council for Outdoor Recreation. Additional information was gathered from federal and state agency personnel such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, Missouri Department of Agriculture, Missouri Department of Conservation and Missouri Department of Transportation.

"This is a valuable planning tool for communities and is helpful when determining grant distribution and regional planning issues," said Doug Eiken, director of the department's Division of State Parks.

Every five years, states are required by the National Park Service to produce a new or revised SCORP to ensure the states remain eligible to receive federal Land and Water Conservation Funds for outdoor recreation. The 2008-2012 plan includes revisions in two areas: Missouri State and Federal Agency-Owned Recreation Land and Facilities and the Missouri's Trail section. This SCORP also encompasses data from the 2002-2007 plan that is still considered to be relevant.

The 2008-2012 SCORP can be accessed online at www.mostateparks.com/scorp.htm. People can also comment on Missouri's SCORP at the same Web site.
