MISSOURI STATE PARKS READY FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
JEFFERSON CITY, MO., MAY 21, 2008 -- With Memorial Day Weekend approaching, it is a great time to get outside and enjoy Missouri state parks and historic sites, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
Missouri's state parks and historic sites are open and ready to greet visitors for the Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial start of summer. With many ways to explore the state's natural landscapes and cultural landmarks plus enjoy recreational opportunities, it is a great time to “Get Out and Play!”
Recent flooding has impacted some facilities in nine state parks. Check the department's Web site at www.mostateparks.com for the most up-to-date information on the status of state parks and historic sites. Visitors can also the department's toll free number at 800-334-6946 (voice) or 800-379-2419 (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf) to contact the individual parks and sites.
The following state parks are open but have facilities that still have impacts from the flooding:
- Castlewood State Park near Ballwin -- The playground and Stinging Nettle Trail are closed.
- Edward "Ted" and Pat Jones-Confluence Point State Park near West Alton -- The park remains closed because the entrance road is still under water.
- Lake Wappapello State Park near Williamsburg -- Asher Creek and Allison Cemetery trails; boat launches at Asher Creek Campground and the old marina; Allison day-use area playground and beach are remain closed.
- Pomme de Terre State Park near Hermitage -- Pittsburg courtesy dock at boat ramp and a portion of the campground at Hermitage are closed. The lake level is receding so these facilities may be open by the weekend.
- Route 66 State Park near Eureka -- The trails on the paved roadways are open, but the other trails are closed.
- Stockton State Park near Stockton -- The swimming beach, the road to the marina (marina itself is open via alternate road), and courtesy docks are closed.
- Table Rock State Park near Branson -- Marina Road (marina itself is open via alternate road), Table Rock Lakeshore Trail, eight campsites and four picnic sites are closed.
- Trail of Tears State Park near Jackson -- The swimming beach at Lake Boutin is closed.
- Harry S Truman State Park near Warsaw -- The beaches at the day-use area and campground are closed.
The department anticipated opening the shut-ins area of Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park near Lesterville for swimming Memorial Day Weekend. It will not be open Memorial Day Weekend, but the department and Ameren are anticipating having the shut-ins open for swimming on June 26. The rest of the park will remain closed for redevelopment.
