SPRING HIKE IS APRIL 26 AT MERAMEC STATE PARK

JEFFERSON CITY, MO., APRIL 11, 2008 -- Learn about spring wildflowers and other natural wonders on a guided hike April 26 at Meramec State Park near Sullivan. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the hike will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Spring is a time of renewal. Join a park naturalist on a three-mile hike through the Meramec Mosaic Natural Area to see how the colors of nature have exploded in the river bottoms and glades. Explore the rich diversity of natural communities in this 831-acre tract, including the spring wildflowers and animals -- some of which are quite rare -- that live there. Participants should meet in the lobby of the park's visitor center and wear comfortable hiking shoes, dress for the weather and bring along water and a lunch or snacks. A hiking stick, camera and binoculars are recommended.

The Department of Natural Resources owns or manages 41 natural areas and is involved in major landscape restoration projects to preserve and interpret forests, woodlands, savanna, prairie, glades, wetlands and caves in Missouri state parks.
