SECTION OF ROAD IN THOUSAND HILLS STATE PARK IS CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION

JEFFERSON CITY, MO., MARCH 12, 2008 -- A section of the main road within Thousand Hills State Park near Kirksville will close temporarily March 24 for rerouting, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources announced today. This section lies along the shoreline of Forest Lake, between Point Shelter and the park’s dining facility.

The reroute is needed because approximately 600 feet of roadway will be torn out to make subsurface repairs necessary because of erosion. After the existing road is removed, department staff will install additional culverts, correct drainage issues and install the relocated section of roadway. The project, expected to be complete in *early May 2008 at a cost of $40,000, is funded by the parks, soils and water sales tax. *project is extended until late May

During construction, traffic will be open for two-way traffic instead of the one-way direction as in the past. This will temporarily close the current walking and bicycle lane. Guests will be able to travel as far as the parking area of the Point Shelter in one direction and not beyond the gate just past the dining lodge in the other direction.

Thousand Hills State Park is located on Highway 157 southwest of Kirksville. The park will remain open during the construction offering camping, cabins, trails, picnicking and access to the petroglyphs.
