When remembering back to their childhood, most adults have fond memories full of fun times spent outdoors. Summer meant kicking off your shoes and disappearing outside until supper was ready or it got dark. With the ongoing increase in electronic gadgets, television channels, Internet access and other forms of entertainment that require an electrical outlet, most kids are not experiencing the same kind of childhood that their parents had. Kids are exploring make-believe lands from a chair and are relatively unaware of the natural wonders that lie just beyond their front door.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources would like to challenge parents to change that trend. Get Out and Play! Take the kids to the nearest state park and let them freely explore. State parks offer trails, lakes, wide-open spaces and some of the most fascinating and scenic areas in the state to explore. Many of Missouri’s state historic sites also offer opportunities to discover the outdoors, combining a journey outdoors with a lesson in Missouri’s history.
In order for the natural wonders in state parks to be preserved tomorrow, this seed needs to be sown in children today. Related events and programs will be held throughout 2008. Please check back to this page for future updates.
