"Great Walker: Ioway Leader" Presentation

12/21/2019 | Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park | Miami, MO

Join the Missouri Humanities Council and Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park at Missouri's American Indian Cultural Center for a speaking event hosted by Greg Olson. This presentation will focus on Great Walker, an Ioway leader, who along with his adopted Ioway brother White Cloud, signed the Treaty of 1824. This treaty ceded the northern portion of Missouri to the United States. During this presentation, Olson will elaborate on the aftermath of signing the treaty and the effect it had on Great Walker and his future.

This event will run concurrently with our traveling exhibit, “Patriot Nations: Native Americans in Our Nation's Armed Forces.” "Patriot Nations" was produced by the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian and was made possible by the generous support of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.
