Archaeology Day

9/19/2015 | Graham Cave State Park | Danville, MO

The event will feature a variety of activities focusing on the early residents of central Missouri.  Participants can learn from the Missouri Atlatl Association members how the ancient spear thrower, or "atlatl” is made and then test their skills throwing the spear. There will be demonstrations of stone tool manufacture and an opportunity to learn about Missouri mammals and their furs. Children can enjoy a variety of activities including corn grinding with mano and metate and archaeology-related activities.

A Missouri State Parks archaeologist will be on hand to talk about continued preservation efforts at Graham Cave and around the state, and there will be a collection of historic pictures and artifacts from the area, courtesy of Graham family descendants and the University of Missouri’s Department of Anthropology.

From 1-2 p.m., park representatives will be available at the welcome tent for the park’s informational meeting. Guests are invited to share feedback and suggestions about park services and operations. This open-house style meeting is part of an ongoing effort by Missouri State Parks to ensure citizens have input regarding the facilities and services offered in state parks and historic sites.

Event time: 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
