Trails

Battle of Athens State Historic Site has several different trails for hiking. The longer trails are located in the Des Moines River Ravines Natural Area and the shorter trail is located within the historic area. All trails traverse hilly areas.

Des Moines River Trail (green-blue) is approximately 1.75 miles round trip and starts and ends in the day-use area.

Historic Trail (yellow-red) is approximately 1.75 miles round trip. Trailheads for Historic Trail are located near the McKee House in the historic area and up the road from the lake.

Mill Ruins Trail is located exclusively in the historic area. It is approximately 0.75 miles round trip and can be accessed at two trailheads: located next to the picnic shelter and near the scenic overlook at the corner of St. Louis and Stewart streets (located by the street sign).
